Buraimi and the Wadi Aboul

I have joined the Emirates Natural History Group, run by a friendly and knowledgeable guy called Brien Holmes, who hails from Toronto and now lives in Buraimi, the Omani town adjoining Al Ain.
My first outing means passing through customs before we drive for about 35k into the Omani mountains to a ruined fort at the head of a (now dried up) wadi. A lack of rainfall and, in earlier times, constant skirmishing between villagers has caused the area to become depopulated.
There is farming in the oases and the Omanis that we meet are very friendly. Brien points out features of the geology, geckos and lizards and ancient burial sites. The company is good, ten of us.
